“A Modest Memory” by Alex Freeman of The Fifth Column • April 25, 2015

TFCThe chair of the senate finance committee sits alone in a large hall of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.  Why are we meeting in here?  He scratched his head, nervously.  Tall double doors opened, and the US Trade Representative, Director of the FBI and Secretary of Homeland Security walked into the hall.

“Senator, we have a problem,” the trade representative told him. “We’ve been compromised.”

The Senator, sitting in one of the side chairs of the dais, reserved for the less senior committee members, looked incredulously at the three men. “Compromised? Compromised how?”

The FBI Director hung his head, and spoke gravely. “All digital copies of the Agreement on Global Trade have been deleted. We’ve been hacked, Sir.”

The Senator, in his early 80s, rose slowly. In a show of reinvigorated youth, he grabbed a nearby chair and hurled it at the three men before him. “What the hell do we pay you for? All copies? Gone? How?”

The Secretary explained, “Sir, a coordinated attack emerging from over 20 countries yesterday, May 1 at 11pm eastern time, infiltrated the servers of your offices and mine, as well as the servers of every single participant in the negotiations. A Trojan was uploaded to each server. It contained a worm that destroyed all data pertaining to the agreement. The five years of work in negotiations has been destroyed.”
“This is why we need a cloud space,” the Senator said. “I told you we needed cloud storage for this. Who is responsible?”

“Not who, sir,” said the Director of the FBI. “What. That what is Anonymous, and probably several other terrorist groups.”

“Do they have copies?”

“We don’t know sir. A video on youtube has just been released claiming responsibility for the attack, but no further details. They say in the video that we were warned, and that they would not stand by while we implemented a globalist agenda.”

“There are over 1000 people involved in these negotiations. How big of an army did they use and why the hell didn’t you know about it? Isn’t this why we have the NSA and GCHQ?”

“We are estimating that over 2000 people participated in the hack, sir, between research, coordination, organization and implementation. The NSA has been unable to track the communications. We don’t know yet how they were able to coordinate the attack and get around our digital defenses. We’ve backtracked the youtube video to a new account created off a burner phone, but the phone appears to have been rooted and running through multiple VPNs. We can’t secure an exact location, as the phone seems to have been destroyed.”

“Did any of our partners break the rules and print off a copy? Please tell me that someone broke the rules. Tell me we have a hard copy.”

“Yes, we have backups. But the message is clear sir. If we pursue this further, the video says the attacks will escalate. The people are speaking.”

“These aren’t people! They are terrorists! I’ll have the President issue an executive order to search and destroy these digital insurgents. In the meantime, find a digital backup and reissue to all of our partners on the cloud. They will not defeat us. Economic globalization is happening, and I won’t see our government and corporations left on the sidelines while the rest of the world advances!”

The lights in the committee chamber darkened. The audio system came on, and, at full volume, a computerized voice delivered a message to the four men. “Gentlemen, and we use this term loosely, your conspiracy against the people of the world through this and other trade agreements has been found. Your crimes against humanity are now known. Senator, we have your email to the Prime Minister of Japan stating explicitly that he will be very handsomely rewarded for his quid pro quo cooperation during the austerity period. Director, we have your request to and answer from the President granting you immunity for certain extrajudicial acts carried out in the name of securing and policing this agreement. Secretary, we have the voicemail you left for the General, advising him to have his command ready to institute martial law when this trade agreement goes into effect. And to the Trade Representative, we even have your call with your priest asking for plenary forgiveness for your greed, and facilitation of greed at the expense of the masses. To answer your question, yes, we have retained a copy of the agreement and are analyzing it now. Your full crimes will be enumerated in time. The crimes of each participant will be enumerated in time. Enjoy your last few days of freedom. The internet police have now arrested you. We are everywhere. We are everyone. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. You should have Expected us.”

The audio went silent, and the lights in the chamber turned back on.

The Secretary of Homeland Security, pale and pallid, said, “They finally declared war on us.”

“We are always declaring war on them,” the trade representative replied. “Did you think that they would remain silent forever?”

“I thought the FBI dismantled Anonymous,” said the Senator.

“With all due respect, Sir,” began the Director. “You can’t dismantle an idea, at least that’s what these terrorists claim.”
pirate-flagThe Secretary agreed. “We took out a few, and 100 stepped in to fill each void. Pirate groups have formed a coalition with Anonymous, it seems. We aren’t fighting one internet army, Sir. We are fighting an army of individuals at once connected and disconnected. They are calling themselves Guardians of Peace. They are uniting against us.”

“Who cares what they call themselves. Shut down the damn internet,” the Senator screamed.

“We can’t sir. Many are operating off of dark nets. To turn off the internet would do more harm to us than them.”

The Senator sat back down and scratched his head. “Gentlemen, let’s go wake the President and the Joint Chiefs.”
